How long whitening actually lasts
With careful habits, a good whitening result lasts one to three years. Without them, expect closer to six months for heavy coffee drinkers and smokers. We take a baseline shade photograph at your consultation so you can see exactly where you started.
The important thing to understand is that whitening does not change the structure of your tooth or give it a protective coating. You are removing pigment that has worked its way into the outer layer of enamel. Those same pigments will build up again. Whitening is maintenance, not a one-time event.
The five habits that matter
Rinse after staining drinks. You do not need to give up coffee. Have it, then rinse your mouth with water for thirty seconds. It removes the bulk of the pigment before it settles.
Use a straw for red wine and dark tea. This routes the liquid past your front teeth. It genuinely works and it costs you nothing.
Do not brush immediately after a bleaching gel. For the first thirty minutes after a whitening session, your enamel is more permeable and brushing can cause sensitivity. Wait.
Keep up with cleanings. Tartar holds stain. Patients who stay on a regular cleaning schedule need touch-up whitening far less often than those who skip.
Do not smoke or vape nicotine. This is the single biggest determinant of how long your result lasts. Nicotine bonds into enamel and discolours crowns, veneers and natural teeth alike.
Two things people forget
First, if you have a crown, veneer or composite filling on a front tooth, whitening will not change it. If that restoration was matched to your old shade, it will look too dark afterwards. We check this before we start and plan for it.
Second, sensitivity in the first 48 hours after whitening is common and temporary. A potassium nitrate toothpaste, used as a desensitiser for two weeks, prevents most of it. If you have sensitive teeth already, tell us and we will adjust your protocol.
When to top up
Most patients need a single in-chair session every 12 to 18 months, or a fresh course of home trays every 18 to 24 months. If you are already a patient, this is a quick appointment and we can often do it at the same time as a check-up.
The best time to top up is before an event you care about — a wedding, a reunion, a big presentation. Give yourself two to three weeks so any sensitivity has settled.
Frequently asked questions
In-chair whitening starts at $299 at our practice, and take-home trays are included. If you are a regular patient on one of our membership plans, whitening is discounted or included.
Yes, at the regulated concentrations we prescribe. The genuine risk comes from over-the-counter whitening strips bought online, which are unregulated and often far too acidic. We would rather you spent your money in a chair than on a strip.
You can whiten your natural teeth, but the restorations will not change colour. If the mismatch bothers you, we can replace them to match. We will plan the sequence with you at your consultation.
